I am Sahat Maringan Samosir, I am a man 26 years old, I am passionate about English since I was at a very young age. I was admitted to the major of English education at the university and was successfully exploring myself by doing many things that go to the course and applied my knowledge to volunteer myself to helping poor children with teaching English through Charity (March 2014-September 2017). Far deep inside my heart, it was my personal calling to be a volunteer to give impact in the society and the time also has completely changed my life and could not be happier about it and yet a wonderfully rewarding job.


1. What made you decide to study in Taiwan?

During my time working in Charity, I was sure that it was the time needed to return to school for higher education in order to help more children in the world. I was able to find scholarship information offered by Taiwan universities through education fair in my country. I applied with good confidence and was lucky to be awarded a scholarship for master program at Yuan Ze University. Apart from that, my consideration is that the quality of education in Taiwan is the best choice as I can see now many international students coming for study in Taiwan. It has proven that Taiwan has a very good the quality of education.

2.  Briefly tell us about the program you are studying. What subjects are you studying? What have you enjoyed the most in your studies?

I am studying in the Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics, the fact that I grounded to choose this program as it offers the courses in English language teaching which is very fit to my goal for master in the English field. It has been my first year now I am here for my study, I do learn many new things through the learning process. I can improve my knowledge and we have a very meaningful intimated learning as all my professors are excellent in their field and they all graduated from the best university in the world.

3. How is studying in Taiwan when compared to studying and being a student in your home country? (Teaching Quality、Environment、School Equipment、Laboratory or others)

There are many things I consider much better to studying in Taiwan compare to my country. In Taiwan, the school environment and facility are super fantastic. The school facility like library is very comfortable and provides the source of learning properly, not to mention the laboratory is completely set up perfectly to support the students’ need for conducting research. Teaching quality is my own favorite so far, all my professors are experts in the teaching and they are super talented to provide interactive learning and lead great discussion in the learning process. I really like the flexibility of being chosen the courses and have more opportunity to organize meeting with the professors for any help I need. Besides, we are able to learn different cultures diversity with the local people as well as international students from different countries, the best thing ever is that students are motivated to engage with many kinds of opportunity such a language and exchange information to strengthen good interaction among of multicultural students. Not to mention on top of that Taiwan is a peaceful country. Everything is organize very well in terms of transportation and the best part I really like is that the people are very welcome and super friendly wherever I go for a function. All those things above I would never get to experience in my country.

4.  What has been the most difficult part about applying to study in Taiwan? How did you overcome the difficulty?

It was quite hard and time-consuming in preparing all the necessary documents for the application process. Obviously, the university was concerned about selecting the international students for the best candidates. The most difficult part was about interview session from the university. A schedule for the time of interview on Skype was informed to me through email. One my professor from my department was finally able to speak with me for asking a few questions related to my study plan in Taiwan. I firmly believe that I did all my best what to say with being honest sand I was able to convince as well as to answer in every single question accordingly. My heart was beating so fast to wait for the final result after the Skype call ended. A few days passed, an admission letter was sent to my house. By receiving the admission letter on hand, it felt like I was the best lucky person in the world.

5.  What do you plan to do after you have finish your studies in Taiwan? Would you like to stay in Taiwan?  Why? 

Living in Taiwan for study would give me more opportunity to expand my competences. It is for sure I am capable enough to compete for seeking a better job in my bright future in life after the long process of study ended from Taiwan. I truly respect considering itself that the university has given me a lot more help in terms of financial aids as well as I am knowledgeable in my field through brilliant professors. I would like to dedicate myself to contribute my own skills working for my department in the university in Taiwan for a certain time before I decide to leave for my home country to Indonesia. As the final my own decision actually I would go back to my country to apply those things my own skills, ideas and knowledge and I am full of hopes and wishes to grow up and give an impact for the improvement of education in my country.

6.  How do you think studying in Taiwan can benefit you in your future career?

Studying in Taiwan would definitely give me many benefits for developing my skills especially for English. During this opportunity, I spend more efforts regarding the long study hours spent every day, the hard homework’s assigned through the courses and projects, and the most important part I really like studying in Taiwan is that I get lots of guidance in terms of assignment and create me to work more independent with ourselves which is really good. Besides that, there are other things I am involved in some campus’ organization to add my soft skill such as international culture summer camp, Chinese learning, this way of learning will be the very effective and efficient to gain more comprehensible knowledge not only inside of classroom but also give me more advantages for advancing my own personality.

7.  What do you see as your key achievements when studying in Taiwan?

My key achievement during my study in Taiwan will be and most suitable one in enlarging my competences as I can really acquire the very factual usage of English through the program. I believe I can not give what I do not have. Now I have a wide understanding of English that it means I can bring many learners to same and good comprehension in the English knowledge. It is very true that my competences have been filled and covered when I am in Taiwan for an experience. Teacher is my long-term career and I enjoy and be responsible to the attribute. All this success in my near future I can see as the result of my commitment and the most factor is that all my amazing professors and people around me through my study in Taiwan.

8. What advice do you have for other interested overseas students who want to come to Taiwan to study?

It is truly admitted that Taiwan has top-ranked universities in the world. There are many advantages to experience the quality of education either in technology and science field. As we can know that Taiwan tech companies have produced very good branded such as Acer, Asus, HTS and other things as well. Another thing is that learning Mandarin and Taiwanese cultures are very recommended in Taiwan as we can learn the language in the right place. At least but not last, Taiwan is a very good destination country for kind of functions visiting and a safe place for living environment. The people are very helpful and feel safe wherever to go anywhere and anytime in all parts of territories. The best wonderful season was in the winter part which the Cherry Blossom are flowering display and I was able to relax enjoying the beautiful views. Apparently, there are no doubts for anyone to decide to come for study in Taiwan.
