Study in Taiwan is to fulfilling my wish to complete my study. Before further study in Taiwan, I was a volunteer in NGOs for many years. With support from my peers, I take up this challenge to pursue my dream.

1. What made you decide to study in Taiwan?

(English)

Before I came to Taiwan, I was able to attend some of the workshops in which the facilitators are all from Taiwan. The speakers leave me a great impression, I was feeling so amazing and got the chance to learn from those speakers. They are really knowledgeable and wide experiences in their profession. This is the first reason I decided to study here, the professionalism of the teaching team. Secondly, the field where I wanted to study is quite well-developed here, I can learn as much as I can. Third, my mother tongue is Mandarin, I can understand easily and fully utilize the knowledge I gained from the class without any barrier.

2.  Briefly tell us about the program you are studying. What subjects are you studying? What have you enjoyed the most in your studies?
(English)

Now I study in School Guidance and Counseling Program, under the Department of Guidance and Counseling. For the past semester, I have taken the course compulsory subjects like Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Guidance and some of the elective subjects like the Introduction to Family Life Education, Interpersonal Relationships and also there will be university compulsory subjects like Chinese and English. Besides that, there are various general education subjects for us to choose and I have chosen the subject Chemistry and Life Application. I’m quite enjoying my course subjects because other than the knowledge from the textbook, our course instructors also shared quite a lot of cases and real scenarios in their workplace.

3. How does studying in Taiwan compare with studying in your home country (e.g., teaching quality, environment, school equipment, facilities, etc.)?

(English)

In my home country, public universities always our first choice because it is cheaper and teaching quality also are the best compare with most of the private universities but to enroll in public university or national university is not an easy way. Most of the time, we will choose private universities and colleges to further our study but, to be honest, the fees is higher than here. In Taiwan, almost all my instructors are doctorate level and enjoy the facilities here with lower school and hostel fees. The school also constantly invite professionals from the industry and from other schools to give us speech and sharing.

4.  What has been the greatest challenge you faced in applying to study in Taiwan? How did you overcome this challenge?

(English)

The biggest challenge for me is my age. I have been working for many years before I further my study in Taiwan. I am not sure whether the school will accept my application and luckily, my application approved and I received the registration notice. Another challenge is the procedure like visa application, result verification, medical check-up and etc. It is quite complicated but fortunately, there is a lot of guideline from the school website and the school assigning a current senior student to solve my inquiry. Other than that, although I have some savings, I still unable to guarantee all the expenses I need are ready in my account. I felt blessed and thankful as an oversea Chinese student, I received a grant to waive my first-year tuition, sundry and dormitory fees. After I got my working permit, I manage to get a part-time job here to continue to support my expenses here.

5.  What do you plan to do after you have finish your studies in Taiwan? Would you like to stay in Taiwan?  Why?

(English)

If possible, I hope to further the study until at least the master level and even doctorate level if I have the ability to do it. I hope I can continue to learn deeply in certain schools of thought in counseling over here. With the experts around, I get the chance to interact with them. If I manage to get a better job here, I wish to stay longer to unearth more in order to bring back that knowledge back to home country. For sure, the high paid is one of the attractions for me to stay here to develop my future.

6.  How do you think studying in Taiwan can benefit you in your future career?

(English)

I don’t know other fields, but in the field I study, it is really well-developed in Taiwan. We have been invited quite a lot of speakers and instructors from Taiwan to conduct and facilitate the workshop for us to advanced our skills and know-how. Graduation from here shows that I have been going through well, systematic and quality training over here. To be able to study abroad also help me open up my mind to in touch with different cultures and backgrounds, to learn more and knowing what is happening outside my home country. This is also a part of my training in this helping profession.

7.  What do you see as your key achievements during your studies in Taiwan?

(English)

I was very surprised when I saw my course structure list. There are quite a lot of elective subjects for me to choose what I want to learn, I can decide my own path and is not fixed by others. During the summer and winter holidays, I can go for a short trip and outing in different parts of Taiwan to enjoy the beauty of nature. Studies abroad are the biggest step I took to step out of my own comfort zone. This is quite a big challenge for me, especially at this age. This will be a great achievement in my life and in my family as I am the first one to study abroad.

8. What advice do you have for other foreign students who may want to come to Taiwan to study?

(English)

Do not worry too much. This place is friendly and welcoming to us. The school and government have assigned specific departments and staff to assist us. There is no language barrier for you to communicate and study. If you are willing to put effort, there are a lot of study grants and scholarships for you too. The working permit also easy to apply if you need a part-time job and there are plenty of part-time jobs for you to support your daily expenses. Grab this opportunity to explore yourself here while you are still young. You will be surprised that there are a lot of chances for us to enhance ourselves.
