I am a Malaysian graduated from diploma in Multimedia Design in Malaysia, and currently taking the undergraduate course of New Media Arts in Taiwan. This is my third year in Taiwan.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

1. What made you decide to study in Taiwan?

(English)

My sister was graduated from university in Taiwan, and I found that she had been a lot more independence after her education in Taiwan. I would also found that the use of new media applications(which I am interested in) are more common in Taiwan compared to Malaysia. I would like to explore more with education in Taiwan. At the same time, I manage to get a scholarship from the Ministry of Education of Taiwan, this is the main reason I finally chose to study in Taiwan.

2.  Briefly tell us about the program you are studying. What subjects are you studying? What have you enjoyed the most in your studies?
(English)

I am studying New Media Art program. In this program, it did includes subjects like video arts, html5, some coding courses, some theory classes about contemporary art and other practical courses. What I enjoyed the most in my studies is the way lecturer relates many different aspects of knowledge into our study, and they encourage outdoor learning like visiting some other places outside of the campus.

3. How does studying in Taiwan compare with studying in your home country (e.g., teaching quality, environment, school equipment, facilities, etc.)?

(English)

think the lecturers in Taiwan expect the students to be more independent in learning, but the lecturers in Malaysia are more sharing during their teaching. Other than that, I think the universities in Taiwan are more emphasized in General courses compare to Malaysia, which makes me gain a lot of knowledge different from my own field. In both countries, I think the facilities and equipment are different among the universities, according to their tuition fees.

4.  What has been the greatest challenge you faced in applying to study in Taiwan? How did you overcome this challenge?

(English)

It was very hard to estimate which school is the most suitable for me since I can hardly have a real tour to the university, it took me a long time to decide which I wanted to apply for. Anyway, I did a lot of research online to have better understanding about the universities in Taiwan. The process of verifying the certification of my secondary school and diploma also took me a lot of time due to the different languages of certificates that university of Taiwan required for the application. Yet, I found a lot of references on the internet written by those who studied in Taiwan before and finally go through all of these.

5.  What do you plan to do after you have finish your studies in Taiwan? Would you like to stay in Taiwan?  Why?

(English)

would like to stay in Taiwan if I could find a suitable job here. This is because I feel that I could transport more conveniently in Taiwan, get higher pay, and enjoys the nature environment more easily compared to Malaysia. However, I still have to consider the condition of my family for final decision.

6.  How do you think studying in Taiwan can benefit you in your future career?

(English)

It is a great chance for me to explore a perspective that totally different than I have in Malaysia. I believe this will makes me a more complete person that can handle different situations, and of course also will have more chances for me to get a job in Taiwan or Mandarin speaking company.

7.  What do you see as your key achievements during your studies in Taiwan?

(English)

Taiwan is a country that really suitable for experiencing an independent life. I am thankful that I was given a lot of chances to involve myself in different aspects, such as activities in school, some charitable activities, helping in art exhibitions, free tour to cultural places held by our international exchange center, and a lot more.

8. What advice do you have for other foreign students who may want to come to Taiwan to study?

(English)

Be prepared to experience and compromise with the differences of cultures in Taiwan, and the differences of basic education we received compare to Taiwanese students. This lead to the differences of starting point the lecturer begin in teaching, the differences of examples given in classes, the differences of words used in classes, and a lot more. There is a lot we need to adapt into, however, we must be open-minded in receiving new perspective and enjoys the convenience brought by their public transports to explore more places so we could learn more about Taiwan, and make good use of our broad views. On the other side, it is good to share the advantages of our own countries with Taiwanese too!
