Friendships in Taiwan/Marcelia Sugata

I am an energetic and happy woman from Indonesia. At the first time I came to Taiwan, I was scared because I had to be in a new environment and surrounded by new people I haven’t known before. However, after I get used to live in Taiwan, I really enjoy my every single day here. Besides, I have found 3 best friendships during my stay here.
1. Roommate Friendship.
Three people just next to my bed come from Mongolia, Thailand, and Indonesia. In the beginning, I felt a bit uncomfortable to know that I have to share my bedroom with other people. In my opinion, room is a place where I can put personal stuffs and do personal activities. Unexpectedly, having them as roommates gives me a comfortable and warm feeling. We often share our stories during the day, watch movies, cook, doing sports, laugh at silly things, and hang out together. They also participate in my birthday party, which was held by Indonesian student. How sweet they are! :)
2. Friendships in Laboratory.
The friendship I get from my laboratory friends feels like a magic for me. My Chinese is very poor and they have an average English proficiency. You can imagine how hard for us to communicate. However, they always try their best to answer me whenever I ask and help me whenever I need. In some situations, I believe the power of body language can help us to deliver our thoughts. We also do some activities together, such as spending some nights together in the laboratory to finish our experiments and having a trip.
3. Friendship between fellow citizens from Indonesia.
It is a great pleasure to have friends on the same boat. I believe that living far away from your family is not easy and having people who can make you feel like home is a blessing. I met some Indonesian students here and we become closer and closer each day. They are like my sisters. I can talk easily with them, no language barrier even though we came from different cities. We laugh at our silly face in the photos, being lost together when travel around Taiwan, participate in sports competition though we know there is no chance to win. When we miss Indonesian food, we will buy the ingredients needed and cook together. I realize we can’t always be together, the time will come when we need to say goodbye. Before it happens, I’ve already known that I will miss them and the moments we shared. They have helped me to make sweet memories here. That’s why I will always remember Taiwan as sweet as my memories with them.
